The Student Merit Award is the highest honor granted to an industrial design student by the national annual recognition program and a prominent professional conference of the IDSA, Industrial Design Society of America. The aforementioned students presented projects from the candidate’s classes for the competitive presentation.

Vail’s Master’s Thesis Project, Presence of our Past, was selected for this annual interdisciplinary exhibit competition organized by the UIC Graduate College and University Library to showcase the breadth and diversity of research at UIC. The candidate served as the student’s adviser for this project.

 

IDSA Midwest District Graduate Student Merit Award, 2018
Recipient: Jacob Rynkiewicz

The Student Merit Award is the highest honor granted to an industrial design student by the national annual recognition program and a prominent professional conference of the IDSA, Industrial Design Society of America; 2018 was the first year of the award. The winning student’s project, Subversive Sustainability, explores mycelium, a type of mushroom, to replace mass-produced polymers such as cellulose acetate. The candidate led the studio in which the project was developed.
