Form is the language of industrial design. It is how we communicate ideas and ultimately it is the difference between the success or failure of a product. Yes, a product needs to work, but without aesthetic appeal it will never have longevity. These student projects address several critical design skills, but their primary focus is capturing form.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN IV - JUNIOR UNDERGRADUATE WORK

The following projects spanned 8 weeks and address a design brief related to brand extension. Any successful brand has developed a strong image, whether it be through formal and stylistic means, or by way of marketing–and most of the time both. It is essential for an industrial designer to be able to break down an object to its absolute design essence, and then build something new with these fundamental components. The objective of this project was to understand a brand well enough to translate formal and visual language into a new family of products not currently offered by the company, but in line with its production and values.

MASTER’S DESIGN I - 1ST YEAR GRADUATE WORK

The following 5-week projects fit within the category of Material Driven Design. Every material has distinct characteristics which make it unique. These qualities enable the material to perform a specific function(s) better than anything else. Students were to select a material from a list and–based on its properties–design an object of value for a modern urban dweller that embraces the unique qualities of the material and fully expresses its spirit.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN V - JUNIOR UNDERGRADUATE WORK

Again, Material Driven Design, but the following are 8-week projects with undergraduate students. Every material has distinct characteristics which make it unique. These qualities enable the material to perform a specific function(s) better than anything else. Students were to select a material from a list and–based on its properties–design a functional object for a modern urban dweller that embraces the unique qualities of the material and fully expresses its spirit.
